Culford Mansions, Chelsea
We were instructed in respect of a roof extension which had been refused on the grounds of it representing an unwelcome structure. The Council felt it would harm the appearance and architectural integrity of the building and harm the character of the Sloane Square Conservation Area.
We contributed to the success of this appeal by undertaking assessment of the building and its local context, challenging the Council’s assertion that the property was a complete, harmonious whole. We highlighted the architectural differences between the front and rear elevations and demonstrated how the proposed design, with timber-framed doors and steel balustrades, would complement existing materials and features. By emphasising the extension’s subordination to the host building and its sensitive relationship with the wider terrace, we showed it would preserve architectural integrity. Our evidence convinced the Inspector that the scheme would not harm the conservation area, securing approval
