Acton Central Railway Hall

The Station House is the former station building of Acton Central railway station. It is within the Acton Town Centre Conservation Area. This area is characterised as a thriving Late-Victorian commercial centre whose success was celebrated by the quality of the public buildings, especially the group around the Town Hall and along the High Street.

With plans to make external changes to the first-floor roof at the front of the building, our initial research demonstrated the architectural and historical significance of the Station House. It was important to understand the local skyline, including the scale and material appearance of buildings.

In our impact assessment, we appraised the means by which the new balustrade was drawn, as it would relate well to the upper storey developments seen in locality. The retention of elements such as window arches, stone balustrade and fascia would preserve the character of the station building as well as be sympathetic to listed (alms-houses) and unlisted buildings in its context. Finally, its overall suitability complemented the historic character of railway buildings.
