Plans for a high rope climbing course above Peter Pan’s Adventure Golf on Madeira Drive received consent after our research into the local heritage context. Located in the East Cliff Conservation Area, near the Grade II-listed Banjo Groyne and Madeira Terraces, the design was seen as fitting well with its historic surroundings. The heritage consultancy studied Brighton’s history of seaside attractions, creating a precedent for the project.
Concerns that the structure would overshadow beach-level developments were addressed by demonstrating its compatibility with local heritage assets. The contemporary, lightweight design echoes the terrace arches, complementing the area’s character. Although taller than the middle of the Madeira Terraces, the design’s minimal impact on listed buildings and the conservation area’s character was emphasized.
We advocated that the scale of the structure would match the height of the listed terraces and Marine Parade, therefore respecting the horizontal nature of the surrounding environment. Its modern industrial design enhances Madeira Drive’s cohesive appearance, providing a subtle landmark without detracting from the heritage setting.
