Private house, Mayfield, Surrey

A Heritage Statement formed part of a recently consented planning application for the development of an extension to the side of the listed building in Mayfield,  Wealden.  The house is an authentic example of the traditional ‘Sussex style’ vernacular with a ground storey of masonry and upper storeys of clay tile hanging  and large brick chimneys.

The external appearance of the house is striking as a result of its setting at the top of the garden.  The L-shaped plan, the overall bulk and massing and the authentic use of traditional local materials add to its character  The half hipped roof to the south west end of the main wing and the dormer windows give the house a quality.

The report demonstrated the architectural and historical significance of the part refronted 16th century building and made an assessment of the impact of changes made by the proposal to build a new one storey extension to the north west side of the building.
